Ware Malcomb provided tenant improvement services for 4,500 SF of common space within Bolar Hirsch & Jennings’ 17,000 SF office including reception, conference rooms, open office, multi-purpose/break room and kitchenette. Bolar Hirsch and Jennings’ goal was to refresh and update their space incorporating technological advancements, while maintaining their traditional brand image.

Working within existing conditions, Ware Malcomb’s design solution included new stone flooring, branded graphics wall, audio-visual millwork walls in the conference room, reception desk, and furniture.

Founding Partner David A. Hirsch shares, “It was very clear from the outset that Ted and his entire team had a clear understanding of how we wanted our space to feel.  It was a very collaborative process – they struck the perfect balance between applying their creative design skills and experience while incorporating our wishes into the final design.  We look forward to the opportunity of working with them again.”

The day began with breakfast at the Newport Sports Museum, where the apprentices heard about career opportunities in Development, Architecture, and General Contracting from speakers Sal Provenza, Managing Director at CWP Advisors and President of Building Block Foundation Fund; Ken Wink, Vice President at Ware Malcomb; and Paul Kristedja, Vice President, Construction at KPRS Construction Services, Inc.

Next on the agenda was a job site visit where the site Superintendent and Project Manager exposed the apprentices to various roles and responsibilities at a construction job site.

The apprentices then experienced a project case study from design to completion as they reviewed schematic design drawings, contract documents, and toured Ware Malcomb’s corporate office.

Taller Tech Construction Academy apprentices concluded the day with a deeper understanding of the ways a background and experience in building construction can provide a strong foundation for many Commercial Real Estate careers. Ware Malcomb Studio Manager, Graphic Design Debra Bryant shares, “When the group was asked what excited them about their career opportunities, one student memorably addressed Paul Kristedja, stating, ‘I want to do your job someday!’ It was inspiring to spend the day with such enthusiastic students.”

Building Block Foundation Fund (BBFF) is a philanthropic organization that enables the commercial real estate community to give back in an organized and meaningful way for the long-term future of Orange County.

CANstruction | CANstruction is an international community service project by the design and construction industry with a goal of ending world hunger.  This year, Ware Malcomb’s Canstruction Team designed and built this structure made entirely of canned foods, “You CAN feed the world” Fortune Cookie. All proceeds from this incredible event were donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

Baja Challenge | For the 12th year, Ware Malcomb participated in Baja Challenge, a philanthropic event supported by the commercial real estate community. Teams joined together October 1, 2011 to build fourteen homes for families in Eastern Tijuana, Mexico.  For the details, check out our blog post, Building a Better Future Through Baja Challenge!

NAIOP Fallen Hero Memorial Monument & Helmand Room | Ware Malcomb was proud to be a part of the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion/NAIOP Fallen Hero Memorial Monument team. We donated design services for the Helmand Room which is a Heritage Room showcasing memorabilia of the history of the 1st MSOB. It creates a casual environment where servicemen and officers alike can gather to relax.  Several Ware Malcomb employees also participated in the Adopt-A-Battalion Program, which involved pairing an employee with a deployed marine as a pen pal, and providing support for Marine families at home.

Ware Malcomb is also proud to support both the Building Block Foundation Fund and the United Way.

Ware Malcomb’s build team included participants from our San Diego and Irvine Offices as well as employees from Trazo and D.A. Whitacre. The team met at the California/Mexico border at 6:00 am and headed into the desert.  Construction began around 7:00 am and the home was complete before 1:00 pm.

Whitacre, a local framing contractor in San Diego.  These guys really know what they are doing and were amazing. Special thanks to our entire team for their hard work!”

Ware Malcomb provided interior design and services for 50,000 square feet of office space.  The interior space includes general office, conference rooms, workout facilities with showers and locker room, as well as council chambers for public meetings.

This full service interior design project also included graphic design services consisting of a branded environment where a unique office space was created to reflect Western Municipal Water District’s distinctive brand and important customer and constituent messaging.

One of Western Municipal Water District’s goals was to incorporate sustainable design practices into their new offices. The project is currently pursuing LEED® Silver Certification through the United States Green Building Council.

Among the 17 award winners, the South Coast Collection project was recognized in the Renovated or Expanded Community or Power Center category. The SADI Award Winners will be showcased with project details in the September/October issue of Retail Traffic.

Canstruction is an international community service project by the design and construction industry with a goal of ending world hunger. Teams of AEC professionals compete by designing structures constructed from cans of food, which are ultimately donated to local community food banks.

Ware Malcomb’s Irvine office was among 15 teams who participated in CANstruction Orange County 2011. Our Canstruction Team was responsible for:

• Designing a freestanding structure to be built from canned foods
• Soliciting donations to purchase the cans required
• Participating in build-night to construct the structure

Ware Malcomb’s Director, Design, Jinger Tapia, served on the Canstruction Orange County 2011 Board of Directors as Teams Committee Chair.

Ware Malcomb’s team designed a fortune cookie structure, delivering the message “You CAN Feed the World.” Selecting the tuna can for its small scale and low center of gravity, the team addressed the cookie’s challenging tapered form by slightly cantilevering each can over the previous layer. The team incorporated a masonite base designed as a red plate featuring the Chinese symbol for the year of the Golden Rabbit. The fortune cookie structure will result in a donation of 1,998 cans to Orange County Food Bank!

The completed Canstruction  designs will be on display throughout South Coast Plaza mall until September 25, 2011. Structures will be judged to receive awards in several categories, including People’s Choice Award. Fashion Show Design Team at work

The Orange County, California chapter of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) recently hosted its 11th Annual Haute Couture Fashion show. Employees from Ware Malcomb’s corporate Irvine office participated in this creative event where design teams create one-of-a-kind fashions using commercial interiors materials and finishes. Designs are judged based on creativity, construction and use of materials.

Runway Ready

This year’s theme, Form Follows Fashion, celebrated prominent Architects. Ware Malcomb’s architectural inspiration was Ludwig Mies de van Rohe, known for his modern, clean design. Working with sponsors System Source, Inc. and Knoll, our design team created a piece reminiscent of Mies de van Rohe’s aesthetic with a hint of theatrical fashion, inspired by music and fashion icon Lady Gaga. Walking the Runway

The Haute Couture Fashion Show benefits IIDA Southern California Chapter Student Scholarships; Free Arts for Abused Children, a non-profit organization that integrates healing and therapeutic power of the arts; and Working Wardrobes, an independent nonprofit organization that empowers individuals to confidently enter the workforce by providing career development and wardrobe services.

Ware Malcomb Interior Designer, Sarah Walker, serves as Co-City Center Director on the IIDA Southern California Chapter Board of Directors, and managed the production team for the event.
