2024 in Philanthropy: Strengthening Communities Around Us

Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, Ruth Brajevich Reviews Ware Malcomb's Year in Philanthropy.

At Ware Malcomb, our core values are People, Design, Community and Innovation. Our “Community” Value centers around participation in our local communities, where we contribute our time, talent and resources to help others. We are so proud of the efforts of all of our people this past year in demonstrating this value through action in locations across the Americas. In 2024, we’ve had the privilege of working with approximately 40 philanthropic organizations. Some of these initiatives are highlighted below:

United Way: “Be the One” Campaign

Our companywide United Way campaign, “Be the One,” was a resounding success, raising more than $60,000. This initiative demonstrates our collective commitment to supporting local communities and impacting the lives of those in need. Several local offices hosted events in support of United Way:

      • United Way Warmth Kits (Toronto/Vaughan)
      • United Way Backpack Drive (Northwest)
      • United Way Toy Drive (Irvine)
      • United Way Youth Career Tour (Pleasanton)
      • United Way Trail Restoration (Denver)

Ware Malcomb has partnered with United Way since 1999, and our annual fundraiser allows team members to be agents for positive, forward progress in the communities where we live and work. Our contributions have totaled more than $1,000,000 since the annual United Way campaign began.

Susan G. Komen: Investing in Breast Cancer Research

We’re proud to have continued supporting the Susan G. Komen Foundation and its mission to “Save lives by meeting the most critical needs in our communities and investing in breakthrough research to prevent and cure breast cancer.” Since 2012, we’ve participated in the More Than Pink Walk in Orange County and have raised more than $100,000 for this vital cause. Susan G. Komen has invested more than $1 billion in research since 1982 to help women with breast cancer. For our company, this annual campaign is not just about raising funds, but also about standing together in solidarity with those affected by breast cancer, promoting awareness, and fostering a sense of community.

Pack to School: Benefitting Students

Our Denver team has proudly hosted the annual Pack to School donation drive for more than a decade. The drive benefits students in need across the Denver Metro area as they prepare for the upcoming school year.

This year’s event at the Owen Branch of the Denver Boys & Girls Club was another tremendous success. Our team members, families, friends, and industry partners rallied together to raise over $27,000 and pack more than 1,000 backpacks with essential school supplies. Through our team and our dedicated sponsor support over the past 12 years, we are proud to reach these exciting milestones:

  • Surpassing over $200,000 in fundraising since the program’s inception
  • Packing nearly 7,400 backpacks
  • Supplying 188,000 pencils, 14,000 erasers, 21,700 glue sticks, and more!

Sleep in Heavenly Peace: Building Beds for Children in Need

In Phoenix, Ware Malcomb served as the organizing sponsor for a volunteer event in partnership with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a non-profit organization dedicated to building and delivering beds for children in need. With the help of 150 volunteers, 240 beds were built from scratch supporting Sleep in Heavenly Peace’s cause. This Fall, during National Bed Build Week, we partnered with seven development community sponsors, helping to push our total to more than $100,000 raised for the organization since first sponsoring in 2023.

Chairs for Charity: Supporting Educational Initiatives

Our Vaughan and Downtown Toronto offices were excited to be one of ten design teams participating in a “Chairs for Charity” event. The event supports scholarships for ARIDO BID students across Ontario, emphasizing equity, diversity and inclusion. The Ware Malcomb team transformed an iconic Eames chair into a unique piece of art. The chair was up for auction and sold for $1,000 CAD, with proceeds supporting educational initiatives for students.

Baja Challenge: Building Homes for Families in Need

For the 24th consecutive year, team members from our San Diego and Los Angeles offices participated in the Baja Challenge through Project Mercy. In this one-day event, volunteers build homes for families in need in Tecate, Mexico. This longstanding tradition demonstrates our commitment to creating positive change in the communities we serve.

WM Community Mission

At Ware Malcomb, we continually focus on making an impact in the communities where we live, work and thrive. Through our philanthropic arm, WM Community, we seek to provide opportunities and give aid to those in need. We support various non-profit organizations and initiatives annually, participating in pro bono projects, providing free and at-cost design services, and volunteering hours to numerous charitable organizations. As we look to the future, we’re excited to continue our commitment to giving back and creating positive change in the communities we serve!
