It is difficult to put into words the impact John Thomas had on Ware Malcomb. For more than four decades, he was not simply part of our story, he helped craft it. As Employee #3 and the longest-tenured team member in Ware Malcomb’s history, John played a foundational role in shaping the firm we know today. His influence can be seen in our projects, our culture, and in the countless people whose careers he helped guide and inspire.
From the earliest days of Ware Malcomb, John brought a remarkable combination of talent, vision, and dedication. As our first Principal of Design, he helped transform the firm from a small firm with three offices into a global practice with 30 offices. Along the way, he left an indelible mark on projects across the United States and around the world, including a significant portfolio of work throughout China.
John’s expertise spanned every facet of design. His career included master planning, architectural design, landscape architecture, research, space planning and interior design. He worked across a wide range of project types, from low and high-rise office buildings to industrial facilities, high-tech campuses, medical facilities, residential developments, retail environments and unique specialty projects. No matter the project size, scope, or budget, John approached each endeavor with the same level of creativity, rigor, and integrity. The design philosophy he established became a guiding principle for the firm and remains deeply embedded in our work today.
While John’s professional accomplishments were extraordinary, those who knew him best will remember him most for the way he invested in people. He was a mentor, teacher, and trusted advisor whose door was always open. Patient, approachable, and genuinely committed to helping others succeed, John believed that developing people was one of the most important responsibilities of leadership.
This belief led John to help shape the idea for Ware Malcomb’s mentorship program, helping to bring it to life and create an environment where learning and professional growth could flourish. Throughout his career, he personally mentored more than 40 team members, many of whom have gone on to become leaders within the firm and throughout the industry. His greatest legacy lies not only in the buildings he designed, but also in the people he inspired.
John embodied the spirit of a true Renaissance man. His curiosity and creativity extended far beyond architecture. Whether sketching concepts with remarkable precision, crafting solutions to complex design challenges, or building a boat from scratch, he approached life with imagination, craftsmanship, and an endless desire to learn. He inspired those around him not only through what he created, but through how he lived.
Today, we celebrate John’s remarkable life and contributions with profound gratitude. His influence continues to shape the way we design, collaborate and mentor future generations. He made Ware Malcomb better. He made the profession better. And he made each of us better through his example, guidance and friendship.
John’s legacy will endure through the culture he helped build, the projects he helped realize, and the countless lives he touched along the way. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered and forever a part of the Ware Malcomb family.
